| Applies to | Robinhood Chain (chain ID 4663) |
| Close code | 1013 client_backpressure |
| Not the same as | 1013 upstream_unavailable (no eligible upstream) |
| Recovery | Reconnect, resubscribe, backfill |
Cause
Delivery is live: the server buffers only a bounded queue per client. When that queue cannot drain — slow consumer, blocking work inside the message handler, an overloaded process — the connection is closed with 1013 client_backpressure. This says nothing about upstream availability; 1013 upstream_unavailable is a different condition.
Solution
- Move work out of the message handler: enqueue locally and process asynchronously.
- Narrow the subscription filter so less data arrives, or split load across connections within your plan's concurrency.
- Reconnect, resubscribe and backfill the gap: eth_getLogs for logs, eth_getBlockByNumber for headers, or the feed cursor for the sequencer feed.
FAQ
- Was data lost?
- Nothing is replayed on a subscription, so yes — backfill the gap over JSON-RPC. The sequencer feed is the exception: it has a bounded replay window with a cursor.
- Does a higher plan remove backpressure?
- No. It raises rates and concurrency, but a client that does not drain its socket will still be disconnected.
